What I did wrong with Coursera certification?

2020 has been a year where most of us stayed inside and got tonnes of motivation p*rn. We all saw videos which pushed us to upskill ourselves in the times of lockdown. Well, I took it to heart and thought it as a great way to distract myself from the chaos going on in the world.

I decided to learn something which I had been wanting to since a long time —

“Game Theory”!

I took the Game Theory course offered by Stanford University and The University of British Columbia. It was a brilliant course. I loved the way content was designed and presented. It was clear that the professors were passionate about creating this course.

However, the problem began with LinkedIn frenzy of sharing certifications!

Along the course, I forgot that I had to “learn” something and not just earn a certification. I aced the quizzes and started watching lectures in passive mode.

It was a stupid move from my end. I finished the course and earned a certificate too. Unfortunately, I didn’t learn anything. I started watching the lectures again but this time slowly. I coupled the videos with learning resources and books.

Finally, I can say that I understood the subject.

I would suggest you from my crash and burn experience that take a pause and ask yourself, did you really learn that subject from the course? or are you simply gathering certificates with actually are of no value? Let me know your experience in the comments below.
