OpenAI in India: How can ML change a developing country?
Hey everyone! A machine learning enthusiast here. This is a very short post in which I am jotting down the points I have for a dream of mine to have an OpenAI-like organisation in India.
I am totally amazed by the vision and goal with which OpenAI was established and the way it has been helping the whole community of Machine Learning, especially Reinforcement learning folks. However, I have some concerns with the AI/ML or to Research community in general —
- I am looking forward for the future where self self-driving cars are going to make roads safe. Amazing! But we should also focus on key issues like helping the kids in remote villages kms away from cities, to get quality education.
- Piling up of NPAs(Non performing assets)! Indian banking system is suffering from huge financial crisis. How we ensure that this doesn’t happen in future?
- Poor condition of Medical Services in the country. Children dying because of silly mistakes done by administration of not keeping a check on Oxygen Cylinders? Unacceptable!
- Cleaning of Ganges and other rivers. Out of 20 most polluted cities, 14 are in India.
etc.
I know that you are well aware of these problems. I know that you must have read the quote by Bertolt Brecht —
“The worst illiterate is the political illiterate, he doesn’t hear, doesn’t speak, nor participates in the political events. He doesn’t know the cost of life, the price of the bean, of the fish, of the flour, of the rent, of the shoes and of the medicine, all depends on political decisions. The political illiterate is so stupid that he is proud and swells his chest saying that he hates politics. The imbecile doesn’t know that, from his political ignorance is born the prostitute, the abandoned child, and the worst thieves of all, the bad politician, corrupted and flunky of the national and multinational companies.”
All I want to say is, I need help! I am in dilemma! I am one the fortunate ones in a developing country who has a good education, high bandwidth internet connection 24*7, acquainted with the latest technology …
“Should I spend my entire life building a great future for rich? or look around and actually Change the world for those who really are dying for help?”
How about establishing a Not-for-Profit Research Organisation which actively works on these issues and publishes the results out in the world? India being such a young country, I don’t think this is impossible! What do you think?
